What the Mask Hides
Placement: Chest
A fearsome mask is split in two, and between its sharp fangs and heavy horns a flower opens. Soft petals and fine leaves fill the gap, as though a quiet life of its own had been going on under the severe shell all along.
The image recalls a fragment of a legend about a demon that kept its human heart. Read that way, the flower becomes the most hidden thing of all — the reason the creature wears the frightening mask in the first place. A story about strength that protects something fragile, and about feelings you show to very few.
Deep shadow brings out the relief of the mask, while the pale band of flowers holds the eye at the centre — a contrast between its hardness and the fragility of the petals.
The composition is built for a man's chest: the halves of the mask sit either side of the sternum, the flower runs down the centre line, the horns open towards the collarbones, and the lower contours follow the shape of the chest muscles.
