Tamer of the Deep
Placement: Back
An enormous carp twists through rising waves, and the figure on its back holds balance with the blade raised. Everything in this scene is movement: the sweep of the tail, the sharp crests of water, the streaming fabric. The moment is frozen, but the outcome of the fight is undecided.
The design reads like an illustration to a legend about a meeting between a person and a river spirit — a powerful creature that tests the courage of anyone who dares to challenge it. Read that way, the fight becomes an image of an inner trial: being able to act even when the force in front of you seems beyond measure.
The rhythm of the scales, the pattern of the cloth and the contrasting waves build a dense composition in the character of a Japanese woodblock print. It is a story about resolve, self-possession and courage in the face of the unknown.
The drawing suits the back, thigh, arm or side. A large format keeps the detail readable, and the curve of the carp can follow the natural lines of the body.
